Your checked bag didn't show up

Don't leave the airport. Head to your airline's baggage service office.

Do these, in order

  1. Don't leave the airport yet.Go to your airline's baggage service office, usually right by baggage claim, and file a report before you leave. Many airlines require that report before they'll pay you back for anything. Get the file reference number.
  2. Have your claim tag ready. It's the sticker the agent gave you at check-in, often on your boarding pass or ticket envelope. Be ready to describe the bag and what's inside it.
  3. Ask for delivery.Give the address where you're staying and a phone number that works. Airlines normally deliver a found bag to you at their cost.
  4. Buy only what you need, and keep every receipt. For a delayed checked bag on a domestic trip, airlines repay reasonable costs for things you need right away, like toiletries and a change of clothes. Ask what they consider reasonable before you shop.
  5. Get your checked bag fee back.If your checked bag is 12 or more hours late on a domestic trip (15 or 30 on international trips, depending on flight length), or never shows up, the airline must refund the fee you paid to check it.
  6. If it's damaged or lost, document everything.Report damage at the airport before you leave and take photos. If the bag is declared lost, file a claim listing what was inside and what it was worth. Airlines cap what they'll pay, and most exclude cash, jewelry and electronics, so pack those in your carry-on next time.
