Do these, in order

  1. If you volunteer, negotiate first. Before you agree, ask what flight you'd get, whether that seat is confirmed, how much compensation, in what form, and whether a hotel is included if it's overnight.
  2. If they bump you involuntarily, know the cash rule.Arrive within 1 hour of your original time: no compensation. Domestic 1–2 hours late (international 1–4): 200% of your one-way fare, up to $1,075. Later than that: 400%, up to $2,150.
  3. Compare cash with the voucher. You're entitled to money, but it's a percentage of your one-way fare. On an $89 basic fare, the most you'd get is $356. If they offer a bigger voucher and you'll fly them again, the voucher may be worth more. Ask for both numbers before you choose.
  4. Get it in writing. They must give you a written notice explaining your rights.
